The male lead is about to go off to fight the Big Bad (or, on occasion, just the bad guy of the week, or even just in The Tourney, perhaps even with her watching), and there is a very real possibility that he won't be coming back in one piece. Knowing this, his female love interest decides it would be a good idea to hand him an object — some piece of jewelry, a trinket, a piece of clothing, a token of some sort — that she claims is of great personal importance to her (how important it really is is arguable, but more often than not, it's really only valuable in the personal sense). In some settings, she often made it herself. She makes him promise that he will give it back to her, thereby creating a small bit of assurance that he will return from the battle alive. He invariably will, if for no other reason than he promised he would return her "most prized possession."

You fight. You fight because you have to, because you want to, because there's no other way for you. It's been like that forever, it seems. Is there no end to the fighting? Or, perhaps, it's just this one fight, but the battle appears insurmountable in your eyes, the competition too stout. Those were all things you thought before you met them. You could have fought those feelings, too (after all, all you do is fight), yet eventually, you gave in.

A little. Sort of. Unless you wholeheartedly embrace the ideals of romance, which is probably unlikely, given your situation.

But now, at the penultimate peril, they come to you and give you a token of...of your growing love, or at least affection. What it actually is doesn't matter: something physical or even words of encouragement. What does matter is that, implicitly, they want it to show that they will be with you and, most likely, they want it returned. You are not allowed to die under any circumstances.

Just another thorn in your side, isn't it? ...isn't it?

You may not admit it, but this simple gift makes you want to fight harder. Why? That's something you'll have to figure out without using brute strength.

Despite the picture and some of the concepts used, characters and threads don't have to be historical or ancient. It can take place in modern times, as well! BETTER THAN ME.

There's some darkness in your life. It doesn't have to be the epic, soul-crushing darkness that destroys your very existence; you can be a mild cynic or someone who's a little more somber than the rest of the crowd. Of course, you could have the terrible times in your life, making it hard to go on or making you so jaded you're even less than an automaton. What purpose is there in going on in life aside from going through the motion?

That is until this person, this one special person came into your life, and it was like opening a window. They're all light and excitement and beauty and goodness, everything that you're not. They've given you a new lease on life, in some way, and now, there's passion, and perhaps new experiences for you. Even if you don't or can't recognize this, it's true.

The one problem is that you don't feel anywhere near worthy of them, though you may not be familiar with this feeling. Actually, you don't want to taint them at all, despite you being, well, you.

Will your guilt eat you up? Can you tell them they deserve someone better? Or, if you desperately want to hold on to their light, maybe you can make yourself better and prove how much you want them by giving them everything.

In retrospect, you've probably had these feelings for this person for forever, you've just never noticed them right in front of your eyes. After all, emotions like this don't pop out of nowhere. But it seems like it, because you've just noticed you like - maybe even l.o.v.e. - this person...or at least be attracted to them in a BIG BIG way. Of course, it may have to do with the outside pushes and shoves that had led you to this conclusion; surely, though, there had been hints before. Oh, there were? You never thought about it? You repressed it? You refused to believe?

Well. Reality is here to smack you right in this face, probably at the least oppertune moments. That's how these realizations tend to work. Who this person is to you - classmate, ally, brother in arms, worst enemy, best friend - varies, and so can your reaction. It's been like this your entire life. Or perhaps it just seems that way, since it's been this way so long. Or it could hasn't been that long, and you remember what things were like before - worthless, fruitless, purposeless. Now, though, all is different. It doesn't matter if this swearing is an expected part of your society or an oddity in a modern age, here you are, and you know what you're here for. Your position, of course, means you're a tool to be used, and every job needs a different tool. What's your job? Were you raised from an infant be be a constant companion for the one you're sworn to, who you grew up with? Instead, you could be a bodyguard or a first line of defense. In some cultures, there's an expectation that people be good in bed for future spouses; you could be there to train the one you're sworn to in the art of lovemaking. Of course, how well you're able to do your job depends on how your relationship is with your most important person. Are they kind? Cruel? What if they don't want you? It will be incredibly awkward if neither of you want to be in this position.

One certainty is this, however: romance and sexuality, unless heavily controlled, is forbidden. After all, how can you effectively dedicate yourself to them if some part of you wants them to dedicate themself to you?

It can be hard enough being ejected from your own home - imagine being plucked away from your home world! This could be because of your own doing, you were too evil or too ambitious to stay, or even due to an accident. Those temporal shifts can be a little much. Whether by design or by chaos, however, you end up in the same place...or, rather, a different place. Theoretically, this world could be very much like your own, with only a few minor changes, like a purple sky instead of a blue one or lion-demons instead of tiger-vampires. On the other hand, it could be completely different, anywhere from more technologically advanced or less so or even filled to the brim with bizarre creatures. They still use cars? What are those infernal beeping devices? Why does no one have feathers or gills? Needless to say, this could be overwhelming if you are possibly powerless and definitely alone.

But you're not alone. Someone, a native of this world, has ended up tangled into this whole affair with you, whether they want it or not. You can't turn that down. They're your only ally, your only anchor in this brand new world. Maybe, just maybe, they can show you a thing or two to help you back up on your feet. Or, best case scenario, back to your home! When you're out of the frying pan and into the fire, though, nothing is cut and dry. Everything about this world may not be so horrible - it may be fun, even - and this person you've ended up with, oh, they could be worse. In fact, you may be beginning to feel at home with them.

Remember. This is not your real home. You want to go back, don't you?

And what about the other party? Of course, you may be less than thrilled that you now are playing tour guide to what seems like a crazy person. Everybody needs a sidekick. This includes those who may have a little help of their own in the form of magic - witches, warlocks, mages, sages, casters, magicians...whatever you want to call them, they have a bit more juice than your average Joe. Luckily, the job comes with a built-in assistant: a familiar, or a helper spirit. The familiar serves as a guide to their magical "Master" of their choice, helping them out of tight spots and being their companion for life. Sometimes, they come in the form of animals, like dogs and especially cats. Some don't bother with this, though, and just stay in their true humanoid forms. The bond between familiar and master is one of intensity, and they know each other completely. Most familiars even have a telepathic link to their masters. That helps them keep an eye on them. Of course, given this closeness-beyond-closeness, it's easy to imagine a master and familiar as soulmates, and with familiars having a human form...well, intimacy seems like a natural option.

Too bad relationships of that kind between master and familiar are strictly forbidden. Surely, that rule is always followed.

HOW TO PLAY

Comment with your character, stating your preferences (ex: F/M, open to all, etc). Also, be sure to remember and put whether your character will be witch/master, familiar, or if they can serve as both. There is no "set" type for any of the roles. Both Broken

Healing doesn't come quickly, whether the need comes from physical or mental wounds. But you're trying regain your strength - and yourself.

People, as a general rule, are kind, or at least not outright inflammatory to you, it seems. Still, you just can't connect with them. No matter how nice, how caring, they don't understand. They've never experienced anything like what you've gone through, or they're not like you in a way that lets them see what you still go through; they have no frame of reference. Sure, they have sympathy, but it's not the same. So there's no real connection, despite any friendliness. It's so easy, then, to feel detached...

...until you meet them, in this place of both death and healing.

They may not have been through the exact same struggles, they may not be exactly the same as you, but they know what darkness is light. How they handle this fact may be better or worse than how you do, yet you can see yourself in their actions. And for once? There's connection; more than that, too. tl;dr version — a meme that explores a shipping concept from a darker perspective. Characters, brainwashed by losing their memories and other scientific deviancies, are bonded with their "lifemate," who they're said to be created for. They must live together and grow co-dependently close, all while the machinations behind the scene are twirling like cogs in order to move them closer to the darkness.

Anyone can be manipulated. You just need to work at them through the right person.
You wake up, groggy and confused, in a white room that is expansive and furnished with all white furniture, yet pristine. The white is probably so bright that it hurts your eyes and you may have to blink for a moment. It doesn't help that your body is swathed in white, too; you're wearing what appears to be a modern day white cotton scrub top and and bottom. In fact, the only spot of black on you is on the palm of your hand: right in the center, there's a barcode. Under that, in neat, angular print, is a name. Your name.

It's a good thing it's there because otherwise, you wouldn't know it. Your memories are gone. You don't know how you got here, why you're here, or much of anything else. Soon, however, you'll know that you're not alone. The other person is not you're captor, that much is for sure. They're clothed like you are and look just as confused. They even have the exact same barcode as you, down to the last number. The only thing that differs is the name under it.

But the room is furnished for one alone. One bed, one couch, one bathroom. You two don't know much, yet you know you are two. The secret is soon made clear by a voice over a hidden loudspeaker. The voice claims to be a scientist and announces the purpose of you being here. This is the first day of your existence, they say, and you two were created together and for each other. Lifemates, the term is. You both are the perfect scientific experiment, and let man not tear asunder what science hath created.

And that's it.

Accept this or not, there seems to be little recourse. The room has no visible entrance or exit. The walls don't budge if you hit them. Nothing works. The only time anything changes is when food is brought in, but neither of you have ever seen that occasion. No matter how long you stay up, you always fall asleep when food or other necessities come in. Could that have something to do with the soft, soothing voices and pleasant feelings that sometimes come when you least except them?

You and your "lifemate" may be mutually scared, get along swimmingly from the start. It doesn't matter. Eventually, you'll become closer and closer. Lines will get crossed. Boundaries will get obliterated. Maybe it's because they're the only lifeline you have. Or maybe, maybe what the "scientist" said is right. tl;dr Your character has fallen for a person (?) they've never actually laid eyes on, at least not fully. The two of them have talked - most likely at length, leading your character to feel safe revealing information and growing close - and perhaps the mysterious half has saved your character or pulled strings so events go in their favor. Yet they've never actually seen their benefactor, trusted companion, or lover has never stepped into plain sight.

Of course, you could also play the character who's keeping out of sight. Whether they have real, deep fondness or love for who they're "hiding" from or if it's all a cruel and elaborate manipulation, their reasons (and methods). There's a danger that follows them and they don't want to bring anyone into the line of fire. They don't want anyone to see their general appearance, their hideousness, their species, their mutation, or their scarring. They could just be shy!

Ideally, attraction doesn't hinge entirely on the basis of looks. Beauty fades, after all, and no matter how you may swoon over a person, no one wants to be left with someone whose personality they can't stand once the blush is off the rose. How much looks matter, then, varies from individual to individual. Still, you can't divorce that facet completely from attraction, can you? There's no way you could fall in love with someone you've never actually seen!

Emotions and affection are strange beasts.

Your character has fallen for a person (?) they've never actually laid eyes on, at least not fully. The two of them have talked - most likely at length, leading your character to feel safe revealing information and growing close - and perhaps the mysterious half has saved your character or pulled strings so events go in their favor. Yet they've never actually seen their benefactor, trusted companion, or lover has never stepped into plain sight. They could hide, stay in the shadows, insist on blindfold or covered eyes. They use communicating devices, like phones or computers, or they only come out at night. Maybe your character just cannot see the other; they're blind or the other character is somehow invisible. No matter how tight the bond between these characters is, your character has to wonder what this person (how are we so sure it's a person?) they've come to have such strong feelings for looks like, right? Don't they? Surely, it eats at them, tugging at the back of their mind, despite what they may think they're content with.

Of course, you could also play the character who's keeping out of sight. Whether they have real, deep fondness or love for who they're "hiding" from or if it's all a cruel and elaborate manipulation, their reasons (and methods). There's a danger that follows them and they don't want to bring anyone into the line of fire. They don't want anyone to see their general appearance, their hideousness, their species, their mutation, or their scarring. They could just be shy! Regardless of the situation, they have to know eventually their relative anonymity will come to an end. Hiding from someone who cares for them isn't viable, and when and if the reveal should go over badly, will their merit on personality alone make up for what could be called deception?

Hello, and welcome to The Care and Keeping of Your Pet! As you surely know, a pet is a big responsibility, and we're so glad you've decided to be a conscientious master. A safe pet is a happy pet, and this handbook is certain to keep your precious lifelong friend as content as can be.

The history of the animal person is a long and difficult one, with their origins not being known even to this day. However, scientists believe that despite our common appearance - most animal people have humanoid forms except for the ears, tails, and sometimes teeth - we share no common ancestry, even if the ascent of this species corresponds with that of the homo sapiens. We gained dominance over each breed thousands of years ago, beginning with the dog type, who have long been considered "man's best friend." Most breeds these days are docile and perfect for owners of any speed.

Of course, it is our duty as the superior species to take care of these animal creatures, and this is inherent in their genetic makeup. Everyone knows that an animal person, when matched with their correct human master, is loyal for life - a true "soulmate," if you will. Far be it for us to turn this away! Ever since the Great Domestication, these intelligent and loving animals have served us as friends, workmates, guardians, servants, and sexual companions and will for years to come. Despite recent hubbub from so-called "Pet People's Rights Activists," this way of life is wholesome and good. Scientific research shows that the natural desire of the pet person is to be owned and cared for by a human.

So, it's your first pet. What do you need to know?

As previously stated, pet people come in as many breeds as you can possibly think of. By far and away the most popular are the dog and cat types, but exotic birds and lizards have been gaining popularity among trendsetters from L.A. to Tokyo!
All pet types are best suited for certain jobs, and when hunting for one, it is best to search for a type that suits your needs best.
However, a "True Match" - when a pet person bonds with you and only you for the rest of their natural lives - comes naturally, and sometimes takes time before you can find the pet you will be able to give a forever home to.
According to all current research, pet people are completely sentient and like us in many ways. However, it is important to remember that they have many animalistic and feral characteristics. Do not be foolish and think that your pet is a person, despite the facts that many are clothed and may be allowed to read, write, and have "hobbies." Some traditional pet owners may eschew these frivolities, and that is within their right.
Pet people age more quickly than humans, at least physically, and many types have long lifespans. It is not uncommon for pets to be passed through the family. When getting your child their first pet, it's important to keep in mind that just because the pup is tiny now, a grown pet can be jumpy around a small child.
It is important to train a pet. Discipline will be necessary. This does not make you a bad owner. Failure to train early will result in a rebellious pet. Training is especially important if you want your pet to serve as a household servant.
Remember, your pet will be extremely protective of you, especially if you are Truly Bonded. It is best to socialize them early. A socialized pet is a perfect family pet.
These days, unowned and unbonded pet people are allowed to live as strays or "Frees" in certain designated areas. Some even hold "jobs." This is against their best interest, and owners who adopt these strays are to be rewarded. Still, the best place to get pets are from liscenced kennels or breeders.
Some masters find it beneficial to participate in activities with their pets, such as shows and other competitions.
Finally, much has been made about the sexual relationship between pet and master. This is a normal facet of the bond, and humans are sure to find pet people sexually alluring. But beyond that, it is only responsible and prudent for owners to care for their pet's needs. It is a well-known fact that the libidos of pet people are remarkably strong, and when they go into heat, it is usually more convenient for a master to relieve them. There is no risk of pregnancy. All rumors of hybrids are urban legends.

Needless to say, The Care and Keeping of Your Pet is a bit biased and full of propaganda, but it gives a good idea of the world your character is now AU's into. They are either a pet person or a human master, and what that means for them varies.

So are they a devoted pet or a rebellious animal person looking to buck the system? A generous master or a cruel sexual sadist? Just a normal pet owner? Most likely they're something in between, but when you're raised in this world, it's difficult to see anything different on the horizon.

Rules

Comment with your character and say whether they'd be a master or a pet. Ideally, they could be played as both. Mention what kind of each they'd be and what they'd be like, (ie: "Xx-chan is a bunny girl who is happy to please her master" or "Asterothia is a cat boy who is aloof but loyal to his true master"). For pets, be sure to include features ("wolf ears, tail, teeth).

REMEMBER, pet does not automatically equal submissive and master automatically equal dominant. This is not a BDSM setting though BDSM can be included. How far you want to go with the actual "pet" aspect is up to you, as well. Your pet could just be your slightly-furry roommate or soulmate!

Star wars is probably the most well known example, but one could also look to the Gundam or Macross series, some parts of Star Trek, Guardians of the Galaxy, Battlestar Galactica, Jupiter Ascending, Legend of Galactic Heroes, or maybe even Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann.

In fact, this person makes you want to look past any self-loathing or low self-esteem you may have and be better. At least they do on some level. Why they care, you don't entirely know. One thing is for certain, however: you'll do anything to keep them safe and by your side. Your situation may just come in handy, for once.
